Introducing Northwest Georgia's first  Transcranial Magnetic
Stimulation (TMS)
Program

On December 12, 2019, Frank G. Pratt Jr., MD and his staff administered the first Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatment in Northwest Georgia. We use the NeuroStar Advanced Therapy system, the most modern system available.

TMS is an FDA approved treatment for Major Depressive Disorder. The treatment is administered using magnetic pulses that directly stimulate neurons in the brain. The side effects are minimal, and less severe that many antidepressant medications.

Research has shown that as a population, individuals whose depression has been unresponsive to treatment with antidepressant medication have less than a 10% chance of remission with continued antidepressant treatment. TMS, in contrast, can help individuals achieve remission in approximately 40% of cases.

Dr.Pratt and all of our staff have received extensive training in the NeuroStar NeuroStar Advanced Therapy system. All of our staff are certified to administer TMS treatments to clients.

A course of TMS treatment typically involves 36 treatments over a course of several weeks. Treatments are usually administered 5 days a week for 6 weeks, followed by another 6 treatments at less frequent intervals over approximately three weeks.

Using NeuroStar's exclusive Fast TMS protocol, our TMS equipment can administer daily treatments in as little as 19 minutes. This allows clients to be in and out of our office in approximately 30 minutes for each of their daily treatments. TMS treatments using older technology often take 45 minutes or longer, and therefore require daily appointments of up to one hour.

TMS is covered by Medicare and many private insurance plans. Individuals who are diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder are generally eligible for TMS treatment  after four or more unsuccessful trails with different types of antidepressant medications.
